Protection for Churches and Christian Schools!!
Advance America has been working for almost 2 years to protect churches and Christian schools from being licensed by the government if they have an event involving food like a bake sale or concession stand.  All we were asking was for legislation to be enacted that maintained the freedom churches and Christian schools have had for decades.  Senate Bill 190 would accomplish this.

I want to specifically thank the author of Senate Bill 190, Senator Jeff Drozda and his co-authors Senators Riegsecker, Rogers, Merritt, Landske, Zakas and Lewis for their involvement in having Senate Bill 190 pass the Senate by a vote of 49-0 earlier in the session.

I want to also thank the House sponsor of Senate Bill 190 Representative Peggy Welch and her co-sponsors Representatives Woody Burton, Jerry Denbo and Jackie Walorski in having Senate Bill 190 pass the House by a vote of 94-0.  Differences between the Senate and House version of Senate Bill 190 will be resolved and the bill will go to the Governor possibly later this week.

Protecting churches and Christian schools was the right thing to do.  I’m grateful for the leadership of the legislators mentioned above and for the support of the Senators and Representatives for Senate Bill 190.

Update on SJR 7 – The Marriage Amendment
As you are aware, our effort to pass Senate Joint Resolution 7 in the House of Representatives is stalled in the committee SJR 7 was assigned to by Speaker Pat Bauer. [CLICK HERE] to see the email sent out after the committee vote April 3.
We are still working with Republican and Democrat Representatives to move SJR 7 to the floor of the House where it would easily pass.
Amending the Indiana Constitution with SJR 7 to protect marriage between one man and one woman and to stop judges from creating same sex civil unions is the right thing to do!
Please call or email Speaker Pat Bauer at [ This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ] as well as the five members of the Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee listed below who voted against SJR 7 and ask them to pass SJR 7 so all of the Representatives can vote on it this year and so that the citizens of Indiana can vote in November 2008 to protect marriage.

Representative Terry Austin (D-Anderson)*
