The gunman entered a Unitarian church in Knoxville with a shotgun shooting when a group of children were performing a play Sunday morning around 10:15 local time (14:15 GMT). None of the children were hurt thanks to a man who acted as a shield to protect the children participating in the play. The man, called the hero by those who witnesses the incident, died instantly at the scene. There were about 200 people in the church at the time of the shooting, seven of whom were seriously wounded and were taken to hospital. One of the injured later died. The gunman was tackled by church members after firing 13 shots and was handed over to the police. The gunman, believed to be in his 40s, had concealed his shotgun in a guitar case the police said. University of Tennessee Medical Center spokeswoman Becky Thompson confirmed that seven people were taken to the hospital, of whom six were in various conditions.
