MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The 32-story pyramid-shaped arena sitting empty on the riverfront in Memphis, Tennessee, once held sports and concert fans. Now, a local church wants to fill it with worshippers.
The Cummings Street Missionary Baptist Church is offering $12 million for the Memphis Pyramid.Pastor Gary Faulkner says his 5,000-member congregation is strapped for space and now holds five Sunday services at three different locations. Opened in 1991 at a cost of $65 million, the Memphis Pyramid never lived up to financial expectations. The city and county still owe more than $8 million on the building. But Robert Lipscomb, director of city efforts to find a new use for the Pyramid, suggests that Memphis would reap greater economic benefit if it can be sold to a business instead of a church.
