Creek Front Park an “oasis of peace” in frantic downtown
Denver, Colo. – Metro Denver’s loose affiliation of churches is providing relief from hot, 85 to 90 degree days, tight security and long walks at the Democratic National Committee Convention this week in Denver. More than 60 churches coordinated volunteers and supplies for a weeklong presence in downtown Denver.
Based at Creek Front Park at the corner of Speer Boulevard and Larimer
Street, thirsty delegates, media, vendors and security personnel are
consuming 150 gallons of water and two gallons of sunscreen per day
from 1 Church Metro Denver shelters.
Musicians and church worship teams from around the city are playing
live at Creek Front Park throughout the week. Ministers are praying
for the city and the many different groups associated with the historic
DNC event. Denver last hosted the Democratic National Committee
convention 100 years ago, in 1908.
The 1 Church Metro Denver website hosts a prayer website as well,
including a public prayer forum and a space for confidential prayer
requests. Volunteers are also collecting about 100 pounds of trash
daily at area parks.
Reece Bowling, pastor of Orchard Road Christian Church in Centennial,
Colo., a suburb of Denver, gave the ministry project its own historic
perspective. “No matter who wins the Presidency about half our
Senators and Congressmen will be Democrats after the next election and
God asks us to respect and pray for all our leaders,” said the Rev.
Bowling. “So we do.”
Another founding pastor of 1 Church Metro Denver, George Morrison
(Faith Bible Chapel, Arvada, Colo.) said the unity reflected in the 1
Church Metro Denver effort springs from complete agreement the gospel
of Jesus Christ and on the theme verse from Micah 6:8. “As pastors,
we’re all so busy that it’s hard to pull together, but this general
theme is a major anchor. I just met a pastor in my town that I didn’t
know. Every time we do something like this, it strengthens our bond as
churches and church leaders.”
“Is this outreach a means to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, or is
serving water to the thirsty the very Gospel itself?” posed Steve Van
Diest, chairman of 1 Church Metro Denver. “Obviously it is both.”
Downtown Denver is hosting an estimated 50,000 visitors, including DNC
delegates, media, activists, and vendors. For more information visit

The mission of One Church Metro Denver is to mobilize Christian
volunteers for prayer and humble acts of service, in order to be a
tangible blessing and credible witness for Jesus Christ to the
community. The theme verse comes from the prophet Micah 6:8:
“He has showed you, o man, what is good. And what does the Lord
require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly
with your God.” Add as favourites (38) | Quote this article on your site
